City Day of Saint-Petersburg

St. Petersburg celebrates City Day on May 27. St. Petersburg was founded in 1703 on Zayachiy Island at the mouth of the Neva River. Construction began with building the first church of St. Petersburg - the wooden church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, and the fortress was named Peter and Paul in their honor. The city was being built under severe conditions - strong winds from the sea, moorland and cold northern climate. First of all, the shipyard, now known as Admiralty, and the commercial port of St. Petersburg were built. In 1712 the city became the capital.

One of the traditions of the time of Peter is mass festivities. The basic idea of City Day of St. Petersburg is participation of the largest possible number of residents in this celebration. The holiday usually begins with official events - laying flowers at the monument to Peter the Great - the Bronze Horseman on Senate Square and the fortress headstone. These days in the Mariinsky Theatre the most honored people are awarded the Emblem of honorary citizen. Church services dedicated to this important date are held.

Main events during the holidays are organized at Palace Square and Nevsky Prospekt which in this day is closed to traffic. Here the number of venues is set to perform music, dance and theatrical performances. Any resident of the northern capital and any guest can choose the event in accordance with their wish.

Traditionally, Ostrovsky Square becomes children country. Ice cream festival is held here. Children participate in the Carnival too, wearing colorful costumes, watching the Regatta on the Neva, making a trip on a yacht.
