The Night of Museums is an annual event dedicated to the International Museum Day, which is celebrated on May 18. This action involves hundreds museums in the world. First campaign called "The Long Night" of museums was held in 1997 in Berlin and was designed to attract visitors and revitalize the city's cultural life. A year later, a similar event was held in 39 countries.
The Night of Museums 2014 will be held from 17 to 18 May, more than 200 museums in St. Petersburg and Moscow have applied for participation.
In 2014, the theme of "The Night of Museums" will be the "Light and Color". The theme gives great scope for creativity, by allowing participants to take a fresh look at the exhibits of the museum's collection and to show them to visitors from an unexpected quarter, adding bright colors to the museum life.
Although such museums as the Hermitage and the Russian Museum lately do not take part in the action fearing for their collections, other museums, large and small, traditionally open their doors to visitors in the evening and at night, preparing very interesting and original programs that which one can hardly see on ordinary days: unique one day exhibitions, concerts, performances, author's excursions, workshops, historical reconstructions. For example, in the garden of Anna Akhmatova Museum poets read their poems all night long; in the Zoo Exotarium exhibit unique inhabitants of the animate nature are shown.
