My internship was in the field of marketing. The company I was interning for wanted to expand into the English-speaking market, so it was my job to help facilitate that. My main tasks were writing articles about my company in English; for example, what set my company apart from competitors. I also helped edit the English grammar and syntax on my company’s website. The ‘company’ aspect of the internship was laid back. My bosses told me what they wanted, and I was free after I completed them. I don’t speak Russian fluently, so my bosses made sure to explain everything in English if I needed it.

I feel like Russians are stereotyped negatively in US media (both news and entertainment). Often times, Russians and their government are seen as one in the same; and any Russian person living in the US has the potential to be working for the Russian government. I knew that likely wasn’t the case, but I really appreciated seeing the diversity of opinion that each person I encountered had. Russians, like Americans, are not a monolith of belief and ideology.

I tried to immerse myself as much as possible. I spoke Russian whenever possible; I feel like my speaking and listening skills improved as my eight-week internship progressed, though I could’ve definitely gotten even better if I had been able to stay longer. St. Petersburg had more museums than I could manage to go to, and I appreciated the diversity of them. Some of my favorites were the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games, Petergof, and the Vodka Museum.

I chose ProfIntern because I found them online and they were less expensive than some of the other options. It was nice to be able to meet and hang out with other ProfIntern interns at the beginning of my stay, it made me feel like I had friends right away. ProfIntern was also quick to respond if I had any problems. At one point I accidentally locked myself out of my apartment and it was late. I messaged Anna and she was able to help me resolve the problem. I would recommend ProfIntern.
